Causes, Prevention & Treatment Of Cracked Heels

No one wants to worry about the problem of having dry, cracked heels due to lack of moisture. This can cause constant discomfort and interrupt our busy lives. Whenever feet become too dry, they can crack and split into areas causing extreme discomfort. It can be painful to walk on or even touch but is a very treatable condition. It can be due to a number of factors from the shoes you wear to an internal medical issue causing your skin to lose too much moisture. It’s important to learn the causes of dry heels, thus preventing it from becoming a serious issue! There are a few things from the elements to your own health that causes this issue, our Podiatrist in Great Neck can help!

Seasonal Dryness

A common winter skin problem is dryness in your environment and it affects your skin’s moisture levels. Whether it’s chapped lips, dry skin, or cracked heels the cold weather can affect the moisture that your skin is able to retain. So, in the winter season, it is extra important to moisturize your skin using a deep moisturizing lotion. This is especially important in the evenings. Apply lotion to your heels and wear a pair of cotton socks that will keep your feet moisturized throughout the night.

Health & Diet

If you have a health issue such as diabetes, cracked heels are naturally more common. Managing your condition well can help with the dryness of your skin and feet. Other health issues such as being overweight or being vitamin deficient can cause your skin to lose moisture. Finding a good balance of Vitamin E, zinc, and Omega 3 fatty acids can help balance out the moisture levels in your skin overall whether it’s through a healthy and balanced diet or a daily multivitamin.

Hydration and Dehydration

Your heels can become cracked and dry when there is too little water in your body. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is very important to keeping your skin healthy and moisturized.
On the other hand, when your skin comes into contact with hot water or chemicals in water for a long period of time, a chemical imbalance can occur in your skin causing your feet to become dry. When this happens, it is vital to take steps to moisturize and restore your skin’s natural moisture balance using moisturizers or oils. Taking good care of your skin by moisturizing can prevent dry and cracked heels from occurring. Eating a healthy and balanced diet can also play a role in keeping your skin soft and moisturized. There are certain steps that you can take to care of and prevent future episodes of cracked heels:
