What Symptoms Does A Podiatrist Treat?

While focusing on managing insulin and blood sugar levels, dealing with diabetes calls for care for the whole body. One area that is frequently affected is the feet. Often due to related nerve damage or blood circulation issues, those with diabetes should take extra care of their feet. Our podiatrist in Great Neck is dedicated to improving foot health and supporting healing. PRINE Health is here for you!

Diabetic Foot Complications

Some of the most common foot complications seen in those with diabetes include:

Neuropathy

Neuropathy, a form of nerve damage, prevents individuals from feeling sensations such as pain, heat, or cold. Due to this, people may not detect other issues, such as blisters or improper footwear. These small issues can become serious over time.

Poor Blood Flow

Similar to neuropathy, poor circulation is a common symptom of diabetes that may lead to even more complications. Due to diabetes making the blood vessels of the feet narrower and harder, blood has a harder time flowing through the area. This can make fighting infection or healing from a complication more difficult for the feet.

Calluses

Diabetes often increases callus development. Calluses, whether untreated or improperly treated, can lead to ulcers.

Ulcers

Diabetes may lead to the development of ulcers on the feet, often beneath the big toe or the ball of the foot. Whether or not an ulcer is painful, all should receive immediate medical attention. If ulcers are continually walked on, they may become infected. Poor circulation could also make this infection harder to fight.

Amputations

Neuropathy and poor circulation increase the risk of infection of the feet. If these infections become too severe, amputation may be necessary.

Skin Conditions

Diabetes may lead to dryness and cracking of the feet. Moisturizing is important, but too much moisture left between the toes can lead to infection.

Proper Foot Care

To keep your feet safe with diabetes, be sure to provide them with proper care. You should visit our podiatrist in Great Neck regularly, as well as maintain appropriate upkeep. This includes washing, moisturizing, and checking your feet. You should also choose proper footwear.
