Flat Feet: Everything You Need To Know

Flat feet are a common condition in today’s world and can cause some symptoms you may not know. Having flat feet does not seem to be a significant inconvenience meaning you may not think about it too much. However, in some cases, flat feet can limit your lifestyle and activities. You shouldn’t be immediately worried about having flat feet unless you’re experiencing symptoms or cannot carry out certain daily activities. Although, it is always important to know the causes, symptoms, and possible risk factors of having flat feet. If you’d like to learn more about this condition, visit your podiatrist in Port Washington at PRINE Health. Here at PRINE Health, our team is here to help our patients through their struggles and not only explain their situation but also find a solution.

Causes

Flat feet can happen to people of all ages, and there is no specific age requirement to develop this condition. Certain people have flat feet because their arch never developed throughout their life. Meaning flat feet can be a common condition among children as well. Although some may still develop an arch, others may not. In addition, flat feet may be caused by injury. An injury to the foot's arch can cause the foot's structure to collapse, causing the bottom of the foot to flatten. This condition may also develop over multiple years as the tendon in the foot receives wear and tear, weaken, and eventually flattens or even causes arthritis. This is only a list of possible causes and may not help solve everyone's specific case. To learn more about the causes of your flat feet, visit PRINE Health for a professional experience from a podiatrist in Port Washington.

Risk Factors

There are no specific requirements for developing such a condition. However, certain groups are at a greater risk than others of developing flat feet. This condition can happen to anyone, and many are even born with it, but if you fall into the risk factor category, you may want to learn more about flat feet. PRINE Health can lead you in the right direction and provide the top-of-the-line podiatrist in Port Washington that you've been seeking. Nonetheless, here are some risk factors you should consider and be aware of:

Diabetes

  • Injury - to the structure of the foot/ankle (this can be the bone structure or tendons within the foot/ankle)
  • Age and Wear and Tear
  • Obesity
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Tips for an Optimal Recovery

It is always essential to seek medical attention and if your condition is serious. Flat feet can cause pain and restrict you from certain activities. More severe cases require the attention of a medical professional. However, there are some ways to ease pain and tension at home:

  • Rest - Adequate rest is always important, making sure not to overwork your feet and being aware of your condition and working with it, not against it.
  • Medication - Pain relieving medications such as naproxen, sodium, and ibuprofen can reduce the symptoms of pain caused by flat feet.
  • Stretching Exercises - Stretching the Achilles tendon may help relieve pain in those with flat feet, and the Achilles tendon can be short or not flexible, causing pain.
  • Weight Loss - Losing weight can lead to positive changes in the symptoms of flat feet, reducing the pain and stress put on your feet.
  • Arch Supports - Arch supports are available to purchase. These can help artificially create an arch on your feet.

These suggestions are for at-home remedies and pain management only. However, if your condition requires attention and you need professional treatment, it is vital to contact your podiatrist in Port Washington. At PRINE Health, we do more than help you manage your pain. We repair your flat feet and ensure the pain does not come back!
