At PRINE Health, we are honored to share incredible stories of resilience and generosity. One of our nephrology patients, Thomas Coveney, a teacher in Queens, recently received a life-saving kidney transplant from a fellow teacher, Maggie Goodman—a colleague he barely knew.
A Selfless Act of Kindness
Maggie Goodman and Thomas Coveney worked at the same school, but their paths had rarely crossed. That changed when Goodman saw a widely shared Facebook post about Coveney’s urgent need for a kidney transplant.
“I saw the post in late October and was surprised it was someone I worked with. I didn’t know Thomas that well, but I wanted to help,” Goodman said. She reached out to Northwell Health, and after testing, she learned she was a match.
“She came up to me on a Friday with a bag of kidney beans, and said, ‘Will you take my kidney?’ And I said, ‘Are you nuts?’” Coveney recalled with a big smile on his face.
Overwhelmed by her generosity, Coveney underwent the transplant, joining the 25,000 kidney transplant recipients nationwide in 2024—6,000 of whom received a kidney from a living donor.
A Smooth Recovery
Goodman, who underwent a laparoscopic procedure and was back to work just two weeks after the surgery. She described the process as easier than expected and reported that she is feeling great.
Meanwhile, Coveney is regaining his strength every day. “She’s an angel; she saved my life,” he said.
